The University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) was established on March 21, 2016 by the Sierra Leonean government through the passage of the Teaching Hospital Complex Administration Act of 2016. It has three mandates: research, training, and service. It is currently the only teaching hospital in the country and is responsible for providing tertiary level medical care to the people of the country.

The Princess Christian Maternity Hospital was established originally as a Cottage Hospital by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1925.
It later transformed to a mainly Maternity and Children Hospital. With the completion of a new Children’s Hospital, the hospital exclusively became the main Obstetrics Hospital and was named the Princess Christians Maternity Hospital (PCMH), under the management of the Ministry of Health with the first Sierra Leonean Specialist Obstetrician/Gynecologists’ as the Consultant in charge.
The area of medicine known as psychiatry is dedicated to the identification, management, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
An M.D. or D.O. who focuses on mental health, particularly substance use issues, is known as a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are trained to evaluate psychiatric issues on both the mental and physical levels.
Many reasons lead people to seek out psychiatric assistance. Sudden issues can include panic attacks, terrifying hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, or hearing “voices.” Alternatively they could be more enduring, such as depressive, hopeless, or anxious sensations that never seem to go away, or functional issues that make life feel chaotic or out of control on a daily basis.
Internal medicine encompasses a wide range of disorders affecting the body’s internal organs, including the heart, lungs, liver and gastro-intestinal tract, kidneys and urinary tract, brain, spinal column, nerves, muscles, and joints. Although certain diseases affect specific organs, the majority of prevalent diseases – arteriosclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer – can impact multiple internal organs. The internist must then be trained to recognize and manage a wide range of diseases, as well as many patients with chronic and complex ailments, as the population ages.
Family medicine is a primary care medical specialty that provides ongoing and comprehensive health care to individuals and families of all ages, genders, diseases, and body parts. A family physician is a specialist who is usually a primary care physician. It is frequently referred to as general practice, and a practitioner is referred to as a general practitioner. Traditionally, their duty was previously filled by any doctor who graduated from medical school and worked in the community. Yet, since the 1950s, family medicine / general practice has evolved into a distinct speciality with unique training requirements in each country.
