Introduction
One of the core mandates of the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) is to conduct training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, specifically in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and surgery.
For the undergraduate program, supervised by the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, the clinical training is carried out at the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex.
The postgraduate training program is conducted exclusively at USLTHC and is governed and accredited by two professional bodies:
1. The Sierra Leone Postgraduate College of Medicine
2. The West African Postgraduate Medical Colleges:
– West African College of Physicians (WACP)
– West African College of Surgeons (WACS)
Postgraduate training is offered in three categories:
Medicine, Pharmacy, and Surgery
Admission Process into Postgraduate Residency at USLTHC
1. Pass Primary Examination
The applicant must first pass the primary examination of either:
– The Sierra Leone Postgraduate College of Medicine, or
– The West African College of Medicine/Surgeons.
2. Application to USLTHC
The applicant must formally apply to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) through the Head of Department (HOD) of the chosen specialty.
3. Interview
An interview will be conducted by the CMD.
4. Acceptance & Posting
– Successful applicants will receive an acceptance letter.
– This letter must be submitted to the Ministry of Health for formal posting.
– The Ministry will then assign the candidate to a hospital under the USLTHC where the residency will take place.
– The Ministry’s posting letter must be presented at USLTHC to confirm formal commencement of the residency program.
