Historical Overview
The University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) was established by the Teaching Hospitals Complex Administration Act No 8 of 2016. This transformative legislation aimed to unify various healthcare services under one comprehensive umbrella to enhance efficiency, service delivery, and healthcare outcomes. From its inception, USLTHC has been dedicated to advancing medical training and research.
USLTHC has become a cornerstone in the training of medical professionals. The institution’s comprehensive training programs have seen a substantial increase in the number of residents, growing from 15 in 2019 to over 85 currently. The training excellence is evidenced by the success of seven residents who have passed their Membership exams to become Specialists, and three who have achieved their Fellowship and now serve as Consultants. These accomplishments underscore USLTHC’s commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to meet modern healthcare challenges.
In addition to its training programs, USLTHC has made significant strides in research. The establishment of the Sierra Leone Journal of Medicine that is now publishing its second edition has provided a critical platform for the publication of groundbreaking research papers, contributing to global medical knowledge. This journal highlights the research output of USLTHC and serves as an essential resource for medical professionals worldwide. The institution’s dedication to research is further demonstrated through its increased publication rate and the successful dissemination of innovative findings that address prevalent health issues.
