History of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been a cornerstone of excellence in maternal and reproductive health services. Its evolution reflects a dedication to advancing women’s health through clinical services, education, and research.
Inception and Growth:
The department began as a small unit focused on basic maternal health care and has expanded into a comprehensive center for obstetrics, gynecology, and subspecialty services. Its growth has been supported by partnerships with various organizations, including Doctors with Africa Cuamm and the Mama Pikin Foundation, which have bolstered capacity and infrastructure.
PROFESSIONAL STANDARD HEALTH CARE
The department strives to be a leader in maternal and reproductive health, combining cutting-edge medical care with compassion, education, and innovation.
Achievements:
Over the years, the department has achieved significant milestones, such as initiating postgraduate medical training and establishing specialized units, including Gynae-Oncology and Uro-Gynaecology, which address complex gynecological conditions. Another landmark achievement is the provision of free health and drug services for pregnant and lactating mothers, ensuring accessibility for underserved populations.
Infrastructure and Facilities:
The department boasts a well-equipped infrastructure, including a 132-bedded inpatient unit, advanced operation theaters, a dedicated High Dependency Unit (HDU), and a modern Blood Bank. Its robust clinical services encompass antenatal care, emergency obstetric surgeries, and comprehensive gynecological treatments. Moreover, outreach services at rural posting sites like the Koidu Government Hospital extend care to remote areas.
Challenges:
Despite these advancements, the department faces challenges such as inadequate staffing and the lack of essential equipment like endoscopic tools. Addressing these issues remains critical to sustaining and expanding its impact.
