Partners In Health Honors Leadership of USLTHC at Award Ceremony
Partners In Health awarded Dr. Sonia Spencer, Chairperson of the Board of Administration, and Professor Kehinde Oluwadiya, Chief Medical Director, at a ceremony held at the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex Secretariat.
The recognition celebrates sustained leadership, institutional transformation, and partnership in advancing healthcare delivery, training, and research in Sierra Leone.
Speaking on behalf of Partners In Health, Dr. Marta Lado highlighted the significant progress in residency training since the organization began supporting the Complex. In 2014 when she came to Sierra Leone, there was no resident doctor. In 2016, USLTHC was established and ten years later, more than 120 residents have been trained. She noted that residency programs have improved significantly, with one Specialist in Psychiatry advancing to fellowship training to become a consultant and others preparing for membership training. She stated that they are awarding these two individuals who have contributed significantly towards all these successes in the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex.
Dr. Lado reaffirmed PIH’s continued interest in strengthening training and research and stated that the award recognizes both personal leadership and institutional contribution to sustainable health sector growth.
Professor Oluwadiya underscored the transformative impact of PIH across Sierra Leone’s health system. Reflecting on his arrival in 2022, he recalled visiting Kono to assess readiness for residency training and described the work done by PIH as impressive and foundational. He emphasized that recent developments in several hospitals now meet international standards.
He highlighted the pre and post impact of PIH in the transformation of the Psychiatric Hospital in Sierra Leone and stated that the contribution of PIH to national healthcare cannot be overstated. Sierra Leone’s health sector, he noted, cannot be discussed without acknowledging PIH’s role. Beyond psychiatry, PIH supports Obstetrics and Gynecology services and contributes to the strengthening of Lakka Infectious Disease Hospital, one of the hospitals within the Teaching Hospitals Complex.
Professor Oluwadiya also acknowledged the strong support of the Ministry of Health in facilitating accreditation processes through financial backing and broader institutional support. He described the award as a testament of appreciation for the work being carried out at USLTHC and affirmed that Dr. Sonia Spencer fully deserves the recognition. He credited the progress achieved at the Complex to her vision, commitment, and hard work, stating that the institution’s current standing reflects her leadership.
In her acceptance remarks, Dr. Sonia Spencer expressed deep gratitude for the honor. She thanked God for guidance throughout her six and a half years of service as Chairperson and described the award as affirmation that perseverance, commitment, and collective effort matter. She acknowledged the Board, consultants, staff of the Secretariat, and all partners who have contributed to the journey.
On behalf of the Board and personally, she thanked Partners In Health for recognizing the shared work and commitment that continue to strengthen the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex.
The ceremony marks another milestone in the collaboration between USLTHC, Partners In Health, and the Ministry of Health in advancing quality healthcare, specialist training, and institutional development in Sierra Leone.
